Before we get into the details, let us first understand what a quadcopter actually is. It is, in the simplest form, a multi-rotor aircraft that has four rotors and four motors. As compared to its counterpart of two motors, this quadcopter is capable of undergoing more stress, causing least or no damage to itself. Also, the presence of four different motors makes the device more stable and agile, allowing to work better under windy conditions.

Large quadcopters are typically used by people who are professionals in the genre of aerial photography or people who treat the concept of flying as a hobby. However, this is not the only activity where large quads make a good career. They can be used for military and defense purposes, or may be used in a bomb search. These could also be used for rescue operations in case of emergency situations.

These quads come with a number of advantages and most of the models are capable of carrying cameras for recording the views as seen from a height or for FPV (first person view). Also, because of the steady gimbal, the camera is held steady and you get a smooth flight and crisp pictures. Their wingspan can vary from about 15 inches to 30 inches, which is quite big in comparison with smaller models.

There are a number of quadcopter options to choose from in the market which is why we have listed out a few that are among the best in the business. Names like DJI and Walkera are popular in the world of quadcopters. Every device has its set of pros and cons and the one you choose will depend on your own requirements.

Let us now check the features of some of the popular choices in this regard.

Best large quadcopters: Top 5 products that the market can offer you

DJI Phantom 2 Vision+

The first product on our list comes from the house of DJI, a name that has done tremendously well to satisfy the flying enthusiasts. DJI has previously come out with a number of such exciting copters and the Phantom 2 Vision+ is just another feather in the cap. The drone comes with improvements over the previous model, the Phantom 2 Vision.

The device in question comes with a built-in camera that can get you some of the smoothest shots from mid-air. This is a big quadcopter, especially useful for people engaging in aerial photography. The 14 MP camera goes a long way in giving you a clear and crisp shot but that is not the only reason for its success. It comes with a 3 axis gimbal that helps stabilize your drone so that the photographs come out uncluttered.

DJI Phantom 2 Vision+

With 1080p full HD recording, you can surely trust this copter to fulfill your desires of flying and aerial photography. Another feature of this exciting product is its integrated GPS facility. This allows the device to maintain its location. What this also does is help the drone to hover around or remain stable in autopilot mode.

On the other hand, there is hardly anything that can beat the effectiveness of a DJI product in terms of flight time! With a whopping 25 minutes, the drone gives you the perfect First Person View on a Wi-Fi connection that reaches up to 700 meters. For a better insight on this model’s features and characteristics, we suggest checking out our DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ review.

Walkera QR X350 PRO

The next product on our list is an equally capable and effective one. One of the biggest advantages of this brand is the fact that the copters can be flown by anyone, irrespective of the competence of the flyer.

The Walkera QR X350 is ideal for professionals who are sharpening their skills of flying. The GPS auto pilot function proves to be a great advantage here. In the case, you lose sight or control of the device, it has the ability to return to its user at the starting point using the GPS function.

Walkera QR X350 PRO

The ‘One Key to Go Home’ is probably the most exciting feature with this drone. This allows the quadcopter to land on its starting position. But that is not all that the GPS does. The altitude hold system allows the device to hover mid-air in a stable and steady manner for the best flying experience.

If you want the real taste of flying, you will need a camera to go with the drone, in order to give you a view of the world from the top of the world. This is where the X350 comes in handy, with a camera mount that can easily fit a GoPro Hero3 camera to give you crisp pictures. The propellers are rather flexible and the device finds it easy to climb and fly. With a low voltage indicator on board, you will be warned whenever the power in the battery is about to run out. You can get more informed about all the bells and whistles of this model by reading our Walkera QR X350 in-depth review.

3DR Solo Drone Quadcopter

If you want a large quadcopter that looks stylish and gives you a power-packed flight, look no further than the 3DR Solo quadcopter. Have you faced a situation when you were unsure of which drone to purchase since you have no flying experience? Well, this product from 3D Robotics solves the issue since this is one of the easiest drones to control.

Even more, it has a video game style controller that makes you feel comfortable with the drone. There are pushbutton commands that give you control for both the camera and the quadcopter. What more can you do with the controller? You can take off or land at the click of a button and you can even make a pause in the middle of a flight, take a snapshot of the surroundings or even record a video for viewing it later. If you want, you can also adjust the camera mid-air to get the best angle for the photographs.

And how do you view these pictures or recordings? The device comes with an HDMI port that can be connected to any screen to get the best experience. Also, you can have wireless video streaming right on your mobile phone!

3DR Solo Drone Quadcopter

The 3DR Solo is considered to be the world’s first drone with a brain that is powered by two computers and this makes it quite smart. Another feature that we love is the Solo gimbal which imparts the required stability to the device that gives you a smooth flight.

On more thing to mention is the ‘Orbit’ feature, which allows the drone to keep moving in a circular track to focus on the subject. For a better insight on all the features of this model, we suggest checking out our 3DR Solo review.

Ionic Stratus Drone Quadcopter

Ionic introduces the Stratus Drone Quadcopter, a large model that comes integrated with a number of exciting features. First of all, one of the most attractive features is the drone’s headless mode. This means that what you control from the base will be dependent on your position and not the drone’s. For copters which do not support the headless mode, if the orientation changes, you would have to be extra careful with the direction. While, on the other hand, if you have the headless mode on, irrespective of where the drone is headed, the direction will change based on your position.

Besides this, the copter is capable of doing a roll in the air and this happens at the click of a button called the one key roll button. Using the remote control, there are three different speeds for the flight of the quadcopter. This includes the low-speed channel, the medium speed channel and the high-speed channel.

Also, the drone is capable of carrying a GoPro Hero camera that can get you crisp images from a higher altitude. Besides, the GoPro holder is fixed which makes it stabilized. This lets the device absorb shock in its course. The drone also has the extra advantage of having cheap replacement parts. So in the case of an accident, the device can be fixed quite easily. But according to reports, this is a rather sturdy drone. Even after a few crashes, this seemed to be working well for the users. If you want to get more familiar with this model, we suggest that you also take a look at our Ionic Stratus drone in-depth review.

The package comes with the frame, the landing gear which has been made retractable, electronic speed controllers or ESCs (four of them), brushless motors, and the propellers. You would however need to add a flight controller and a radio system for best results.

The reason why this is so steady in air is because of its carbon fiber arms which make the system a lightweight structure, easy to fly. With a stylish design and an efficient power packed performance, this device can go on to appease both professionals and hobbyists. Besides, make sure you keep the copters away from public places like the airport where they can interfere with the normal functioning.

Classes of quadcopters

There are different types of quadcopters in the market. There might also be different classifications based on the features, use and the likes. Here, we are classifying this exciting device on the basis of their sizes and what each size is used for.

Toy sized

These are more popularly called the mini quadcopters. We find these quite a lot. The wingspan for these small copters is about 6 to 12 inches. Add to that, the propellers are about 5 inches long. These don’t go too far from the operator, but are steady.

Toy sized quadcopter

The mini quadcopter is a lightweight product that is easy to control. It is also sturdy and resistant to some minor crashes here and there. Once broken, the replacement parts can be easily available for lower prices.

Who should use these? The toy quadcopters, as the name suggests, is mainly useful for beginners and amateurs who are trying their hands at flying for the first time, mainly indoors.

Hobby quadcopter

This is considered to be a large quadcopter with a wingspan of 12 to 24 inches. The propellers, in this case, have lengths varying between 6 to 12 inches. These can usually go quite far from the base point where the user or operator stands.

Also, these copters can carry a small camera in the likes of GoPro Hero 3+. But sometimes, it has been noticed that the quads tend to become too heavy with the burden of the camera, the gimbal and the likes.

Hobby quadcopter with camera

These are bigger in size and thus more prominent. These quads can travel a bigger distance and the fact that they can carry a camera opens the door to many exciting images and video footages.

Who should use these? These midsized quadcopters are ideal for people who pursue flying or aerial photography as a hobby.

Professional quadcopter

This is the largest variation of the quadcopter. It has a wingspan of about 25 to 30 inches making it quite big. The propellers go as far as about 12 inches and almost all of the copter models under this category come with a camera or a camera gimbal.

Pro quadcopters have a solid body which makes it easier to mount a sufficiently equipped camera. This also ensures that the camera remains steady and the whole model, in general, is not affected by the extra weight. Sometimes, these quads have extra space to fit in a few additional gadgets.

Professional quadcopter

These quads are well equipped to carry heavy cameras and thus get you the most crisp and stable pictures and video footages. They are also known to be able to go through a few crashes without causing much damage. Also, these drones can be flown farther away from the user, making them cover a larger track.

Who should use these? These drones are ideal for professionals, especially ones who are in the business of aerial photography.

Now sure what model to buy?

With each passing day, more and more people are getting interested in quadcopters for professional purposes or for pursuing a hobby. Thus, there are a number of such devices in the market. We have presented 5 of the most exciting large quadcopters that can be taken outdoors for a spin, sometimes just for the idea of flying while at other times to get a good clear first person view of the world from above or for the purposes of aerial photography. Whatever may be your reason for purchasing a quadcopter, you would definitely enjoy the adventure of flying it in the air.

When we talk about flying a drone and taking some crisp pictures of the sights above, one of the first names that cross our minds is the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+. This comes with significant improvements over the Phantom 2 Vision with the addition of a camera. The gimbal being stable and sturdy, you have the chance to click some really smooth pictures. The Return to Home feature is undoubtedly one of the most exciting options in this device using the GPS system. Its impeccable flight time can really attract any enthusiast here.

DJI Phantom 2 Vision+

Talking about the flight time, the Walkera QR X350 PRO is another device that can challenge the Phantom on this aspect. This claims to have a total aerial time of 20 to 25 minutes which is rather impressive. The transmitter working range is a good 1.5 km to 2 km making it a well-connected device. The system is easy to set up and has a very solid body. However, it is not ideal for an entry level pilot.

Walkera QR X350 PRO

On the other hand, if you really are an entry level pilot trying to have some experience in terms of flying, the 3DR Solo drone should be your best call here. The device comes with a very convenient control system that lets you manage the copter from your base.

The functions are easy to understand and implement. Also, the efficient camera network gives you smooth and crisp pictures that can be viewed as FPV or on any screen. However, the GPS connectivity fails to function properly at times, giving the users a difficult time.

3DR Solo drone

When we talk about the ease of flying, the Ionic Stratus drone seems to be a good choice. This will give you one of the most stable flights. One attractive feature is the headless mode which gives you better control of the drone and in turn, the camera focus.

The device is really easy to maneuver, but, as reported by the users, the shock mount tends to be a problem leading to unclear and cluttered videos. Also, it can endure small and light winds but wouldn’t hold ground against stronger winds.

Ionic Stratus Drone Quadcopter

This brings us to the last product, the X650 from Thunder Tiger Robotix. This gives a really stable and solid flight. This quad might be a little expensive so it is best only for the professional pilots or aerial photographers.

Also, you would need to add the flight controller separately to have a good flight. But, overall, this device tends to have a very solid structure which can bear a few crashes.

X650 from Thunder Tiger Robotix

Pros:

  • Flying outdoors: One of the biggest advantages of flying a large quadcopter is being able to take it outdoors, without disturbing anything else.

The 3DR Solo Drone received a new firmware and now flies much better, just flawless. Actually, the first time I used it with the new software, was one of the most exciting experience for me. I recommend this model for those who love high-quality and want to capture wonderful videos.

  • Thanks for the recommendation Justin.

  • Michael Johanson

I totally agree with Justin. The 3DR Solo drone is just amazing. In addition to the new software it is even better. On the other hand I have seen people that argue about the gimbal. Of course you need a gimbal to gain steadiness, which you won’t get unless you order it with the drone. I have personally bought it from B&H and I am totally satisfied with the product.

  • Glad to hear that, Michael.

  • Jim Clark

DJI has backed a great product! I have owned this model for almost a year now and have had a great experience. Quick set up, amazing speed and control. Oh. And the camera on the DJI Phantom Vision 2+ takes crystal clear photos and videos
